first try at wire tatting

I have decided to branch out a bit and tried tatting with wire. I had some copper wire on hand and paired it with some beads and worked up this pair of earrings.

I then splurged and bought some more wire, silver and gold and brass colored as well as some ear wires and jump rings, so will have to see where this takes me.

~later~ I forgot to mention, this is 28gauge wire it is a spool that I picked up in the bead section at I think Hobby Lobby in Fargo ND. but the silver, gold and brass wires are both size 28 & 30 and I ordered them from Firemountaingems

  1. Your earrings are beautiful! Did you use a shuttle, or did you finger tat?

  2. Hi Diane, I finger tatted as they are so small, it only took a couple of feet of wire. I want to use a shuttle, but need one with a large round center post I think, or a very large bobbin, so there are no kinks in the wire, I haven't found one that I think will work yet.

  3. Wire tatting is very intricate and a beauty on its own but for some reason, it doesn't interest me in the least. I love wirewired jewelry but don't want to tat with wire. We had a class with wire tatting by Carolyn Regnier in my lace guild and she does beautiful wire tatting, but it's one thing I can't seem to get into. Your earrings look great, especially for a first try!

  4. Pretty, but they make my fingers ache! Is the wire difficult to work?

  5. Hi Gina, thanks for your comment, I wish there was somewhere near here where I could meet other lace makers.
HI Fox, it made me left hand ache too, but I am going to try it. I like the look of it, and I have a big wire project in the back of my head, so want to see if I could work with wire enough to make it.
