more tatting

I have a dear friend who has moved away and just lately sent me a friendship present.  I am "retaliating" with a pair or earrings.

The thread is a LadyShuttleMaker HDT in size 50 Wildflowers.  The seed beads are unknown.  The drop beads and the findings (doodads) are from FireMountainGems.

I have been working on the turquoise doily again today. Another row, is nearly finished.  I need to concentrate on that so it gets finished soon.

I have another project that I have started.  Many of you may have figured out that I am Catholic.  Many of you may remember way back yonder when the Catholic women wore a veil or hat to Mass.  I have been feeling called to wear a hat or veil for quite some time now, and resisted for a long time.  I occasionally wore a straw summer hat off and on over the years, but was never comfortable. About a year ago, I started to wear a small black hat I inherited from my Grandmother.
It felt right to wear something on my head in respect.  But I started feeling like I wanted to return to wearing a veil. So I started looking for one I could add Tatting to.
There are many websites online offering Chapel Veils, but they are basically allover lace, no plain net.  I finally found one on Etsy at LizzieLovesVintage  It was perfect.
about 40" along the wide end and about 20" deep to the point.  It is mostly a nice net with some lace along the edge.
perfect for adding tatting.  I am going to replace the edging over time, but for now am wearing it as is.  I will be appliqueing tatting to the net ground.
The first item to be added is this cross.  It is the pattern Camilla by Lene Bjorn from her book of Cross shaped Bookmarks.

It is tatted in Jess's Grackle Mess size 80.  It is a bit hard to see how pretty the thread is in this picture, so I took a closer one.

If you click on it and make it bigger, you should be able see the different colors in the thread, purple, green indigo...

I will also be doing a bunch of VicTats's Roses are Red.  Her patterns are available on her blog along the right side.  or Click here to go directly to the Rose pattern on Keep and Share.

It rained about .7" by the time it was done today, so was able to spend most of the afternoon tatting.

Have a great week everyone.

  1. Pretty earrings. I noticed the tatted angel on your hat and I think your veil will look fabulous. Happy Tatting.

    1. Thanks you, however, the angel on my hat is not tatted, but looking at it, I should check to see if I can tat around the halo. Thanks for the idea.

  3. The earrings are wonderful! What a great way to retaliate!

I'm not Catholic, but I do remember ladies wearing veils to church when I was young. There are some wonderful photos of Jackie Kennedy wearing a veil as she exited the church. I always thought veils made women look very elegant. Presbyterian women wore hats... not nearly as elegant! ;-)

  4. Veils is a Catholic thing? I never knew. I sure like your hat, though!

  5. The veil will be gorgeous! I'd love to see the turquoise doily.

In your searches, did you find anything for making communion veils? Our goddaughter will have First Communion next year and I want to make her a veil with tatting. I just need the "circlet".

I like the hat a lot too.

    1. Michelle, I didn't find anything with the plain net ground until I found this one in Wales, UK. I was actually thinking I would have to hit up Jane E for across the pond instructions in netting to make my own .
There maybe fabric stores near you that carry a plain net ground to use for veiling. The nearest store to me is 60 miles. You may also be able to find a plain net through a wedding wholesaler.

    3. Phew. I love turquoise.

It's not the veiling that I'm looking for but the circlet itself. I'm planning on flowers around the circlet and trails of tatting like this: http://janeczkowo.blogspot.com/2013/04/komunijnie.html

    4. Oh, now I see, sorry, I still think that should be available either online through a wedding supplier or at your neighborhood wedding store. Another option would be to take a wire circle and wrap it very tight with white ribbon. If you use a long piece of wire and wrap it in a circle several times, you would have some strength and no ends. Then wrap it with the ribbon and stitch the ends well. You should have no problem then adding the tatting and the trails. If you know of someone that advertises that they make wedding/first communion veils, they should be able to point you in the right direction for supplies.
That will look very lovely for your goddaughter. Post some pictures when you finish it, please.

  9. A mantilla! - and I still have mine from schooldays..... What a good idea to buy a plain one to embellish, it would even be possible, wouldn't it, to buy some black tulle and tat an edging!
Lots of women wear them to Mass at my Latin parish, and very often they are white as well as black; and I've noticed that several have been bought as souvenirs from places like Lourdes. It's not easy to just go into a shop and buy a new one!

    1. The Tulle idea was in the back of my head if I didn't find one that I was looking for. This way I can wear it now as it is while I finish the tatting.
